Conceived Naturally After 9 Weeks of Acupuncture

A patient testimonial

After being married for three years my husband Mark and I decided we were ready to start “trying” for a baby. We had no idea how difficult and disappointing “trying” would be for us.  I was on birth control for over ten years and knew that I might have a difficult time conceiving, but I was never prepared for what lie ahead.

For the first three months we tried on the days I assumed I was most fertile.  The problem was I had irregular cycles, so we never really knew when to “try”.  So, I purchased ovulation tests and started using them to see if I ovulated. Sometimes the test said I did, but some months the test never indicated that I ovulated.  After using ovulation tests for six months, and still not getting pregnant, I was afraid I wasn’t even ovulating so I made an appointment with a Reproductive Endocrinologist.

At my first appointment with my R.E.  I took a pregnancy test and to my surprise it was positive.  The doctor had me come in two days later to test my HCG level and to my disappointment he did not have good news.  My numbers were falling, which indicated I would have a miscarriage.  After having my miscarriage I felt like everything in my life was out of my control.  So, rather than leaving it all up to doctors and medicine, I decided to research natural ways to conceive.  That’s when I found Dr. Zhou’s website.  I read about her philosophies, and other women’s testimonies, which are what inspired me to call and make an appointment.

When I first met Dr. Zhou she asked me several questions about the past 10 months of trying to conceive and took a lot of notes.  She was sympathetic, caring, and very knowledgeable about infertility so I immediately felt at easy talking to her about something so private. Dr. Zhou explained to me that since I had just had a miscarriage it was important to get my cycles on track, and for me to focus on my health. She also told me not to expect to get pregnant the first month of treatment, and asked me to commit to acupuncture for 3-6 months.  I committed to treatment, but most importantly I felt relieved, and believed I could get pregnant!

Meanwhile I continued to see my R.E. and he recommended that my husband have his sperm count tested and that I have a hysterosalpingogram, a basic fertility test to determine if there were any blockages in my fallopian tubes. In retrospect I’m glad we did these tests because they came back normal, and ruled out other possibilities to our infertility.

In month 12 of “trying” a progesterone test revealed I had not ovulated.  A nurse from my R.E.’s office called with the disappointing news and told me after I started my period this cycle to call the office so I could get started on Clomid, and schedule an appointment for Artificial Insemination.  I was shocked that this was the next step and asked her if she thought that was necessary.  She said, “A combination of Clomid and A.I. is your best chance of getting pregnant.”

When I go off the phone with her I was in disbelief.  I emailed Dr. Zhou and told her what happened, and asked her what she thought I should do.  Within a few hours she called me and, after gathering all the information, she advised me to continue treatment with her for another month, and believed it was too soon for my body to try Clomid and A.I.

Without hesitating I agreed with her and continued treatment like she suggested.  My treatment consisted of herbal tea and weekly acupuncture sessions.  I also followed Dr. Zhou’s other instructions like not drinking anything cold, no alcohol, no sugar, and no caffeine. While I was under Dr. Zhou’s care I committed to doing exactly what she said, and made my health my first priority.  I also took my basal body temperature every morning and brought my chart to her each week so she could assess my situation.

To my surprise after seeing Dr. Zhou for only 9 weeks I got pregnant!  What I would like to share most with all of you reading this is: the medical world tends to recommend “cookie-cutter” services. If I would have followed my R.E.’s instructions and completed a cycle of Clomid and Artificial Insemination it would have been unsuccessful because they were treating me as if I ovulated on Day 14, when in my case I ovulated on Day 21. Dr. Zhou gives you an individualized treatment plan, teaches you how to track your menstrual cycle, and other helpful tips on what to do while trying to conceive.  For treatment to work you have to believe in yourself, in your body, and in acupuncture.  I truly believe that the only reason I am pregnant today, and expecting a baby in September, is because of Dr. Zhou and acupuncture.
