Successful Natural Pregnancy After Three Miscarriages
A patient testimonial
I came to Dr. Zhou’s after having a few years of troubled pregnancies/miscarriages. I have an 8 year old daughter and 3 years ago, I gave birth to a little girl who lived only 13 hours. The blood flow in the umbilical cord was constricted due to over coiling of the blood vessels and the doctors believe that caused a severe stroke about a week before she was born. Since that time, I’ve had 3 miscarriages and a D&C was needed for 2 of the 3. I visited an infertility specialist for the recurrent miscarriages, but they found nothing wrong with me to cause them.
For these recent pregnancies, I had been given drugs to help ovulation since I was not getting pregnant naturally with Femara and then Clomid. I was a nervous wreck using these drugs. Since my cycles were a bit irregular with spotting as well, I feared I would take the drugs at the wrong time and damage the baby if I had already conceived. Femara worked well for me as far as achieving ovulation, but I had read it was not necessarily safe for inducing ovulation so I no longer wanted to use it. With Clomid, ovulation was never successful and additionally threw my cycle more out of balance. I stopped using the Clomid hoping for my system to reset.
After 4 months of waiting for this to happen with no luck, I turned 39 and things just got worse. I began having hot flashes and no ovulation for months. I was very frustrated and about to give up. I didn’t want to do any more infertility treatments with drugs. My doctor kept telling me I was aging and pregnancy would be difficult so he recommended IVF, but I really didn’t think that would work. From my experience, getting pregnant wasn’t my problem, if I ovulated somewhat regularly, pregnancy would probably occur. My opinion was if my system was out of balance, the IVF would not help as the embryo wouldn’t survive. I wanted something to help the balance of my system.
While I was researching what might be available to help this situation, I ran across acupuncture as a possibility. I have always been interested in herbs and natural remedies, but I had never tried acupuncture. I was a bit hesitant about the thought of needles. In spite of that, I did more reading on acupuncture, how it works and what might be possible. I read good reports, so decided that I may as well give it a try. I found Dr. Zhou on the internet and was impressed with her credentials and experience in infertility. So, although it was an hour drive for me to visit her, I felt it was worth it.
The first visit was very relaxing and I felt comfortable with Dr. Zhou right away. The acupuncture needles are actually painless! In addition to acupuncture, she uses herbs made into a tea to balance your system. Since I am not a tea drinker, the herbs she prescribed were not that palatable, but it didn’t take long to get used to the taste and I was motivated to do all I could to have success. Within the first week or two, I felt so much better not only physically, but emotionally as well, which was a side benefit I didn’t expect. By 5 or 6 weeks, I had ovulated. It wasn’t an ideal cycle, but it was encouraging. Dr. Zhou was very confident and encouraging that I had a good possibility of becoming pregnant. My body was still working as it should, it just needed more repair time. I continued to improve for a few months, but then had a setback where I started getting hot flashes again. I was a bit discouraged, but Dr. Zhou was determined that my problem could be fixed. So, I continued with the herbs and the weekly treatments and miraculously, 2 months later, I was pregnant!
Of course, with all my previous miscarriages, I was very nervous about the outcome, so although I was excited, I was cautious as well. I continued the weekly visits until the pregnancy was about 10 weeks along because in addition to assisting with infertility, the acupuncture and herbs help with supporting the pregnancy. My total treatment time with Dr. Zhou was about 9 months. Everything went well and I now have a handsome, healthy baby boy!
